Skryne – or
Skreen - is a village situated on and around a hill 12km south
east of Navan. It is
situated on the far side of the Gabhra valley from the Hill of Tara.
This valley is sometimes referred to as the Tara-Skryne Valley. The
Hill of Skryne is actually higher than the neighbouring Hill of
Tara. The ruins of the
mid-15th century Rathmore church and cross, dedicated to St.
Lawrence, dominate the hill. It is known locally as Skryne tower and
is visible from a large area of Meath. At the foot of the tower is a
pub and stables that feature in the Guinness "white Christmas"
television advertisement. |
