Ballybay is a
small town in the eastern part of Co Monaghan located close to the
border with Co Armagh. The town is the meeting point for roads going
to Monaghan, Castleblayney, Carrickmacross and Clones. The town grew
up around the convergence of these roads.
Ballybay is a picturesque town surrounded by gentle rolling hills
and plentiful lakes and wetlands, with fine buildings and store
fronts, a legacy from its linen and horse fair days. The local lakes
are internationally renowned for their pike as well as for their
birdlife.
Ballybay itself is built on the shores of Lough Major with the
Dromore River flowing to the south of the town. Lough Major has
beautiful and peaceful walkways and fishing points, as well as the
new Town Park, which contains a new playground, community centre and
a bowling green.
The Ballybay area in general has unspoiled landscape, wildlife,
beautiful scenery and lots to do for both locals and visitors alike.
Fishing is the major activity. Coarse anglers will find good stocks
of bream, roach, tench, carp, pike and perch. Game anglers can enjoy
salmon fishing as well as wild, brown and rainbow trout fishing.
The Ballybay Wetlands are situated on the Dromore River
system approximately one kilometre downstream from Ballybay town.
This area is recognised as being a regionally important site for
wintering migratory birdlife including Whooper swan and Siberian
widgeon as well as a year-round refuge for a wide spectrum of
waterfowl.
A new eco-tourism
initative – the Wetlands Centre – is based on the the 65 acre
Derryvalley Farm. This centre offers an unparalleled venue for the
study and appreciation of a unique wildlife experience. To add to
the tranquillity of the setting, there are 1.5km of habitat trails,
bird watching areas, a floating pontoon walkway with a boardwalk
onto Coolderry Lake along with angling stands and a pond dipping
deck.
The fabulous Concra Wood Golf and Country Club is just 15km
east of Ballybay.
