Carrickmacross
is Co Monaghan’s second largest town and is located in the south of
the county. The town is located centrally between Dundalk, Monaghan
Town, Cavan and Ardee.
Carrickmacross, is one of the few surviving market towns in Ireland.
It was developed around a Castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630.
The Convent of the St. Louis Nuns now stands on the original castle
site. There are still many fine historical buildings in
Carrickmacross today which has led to the town being designated a
Heritage Town.
For generations Carrickmacross was renowned for lace making.
The St. Louis Nuns were largely responsible for the revival of
lace-making skills in the region and the Carrickmacross Lace
Co-operative has been instrumental in keeping the tradition alive
today. This lace may be purchased at The Gallery Centre where
demonstrations of this skill can be given by prior request.
Mannan Castle Golf Club is located 5km north of
Carrickmacross. This is a relatively new parkland course originally
opened as an 9-hole course but recently developed into a fine
18-hole course. The course is set in the tranquil surroundings of
the 12th Century Mannan Castle. Facilities include 18 U.S.G.A
standard greens, a state-of-the-art, 10 bay floodlit driving range
and a fully stocked professional shop. Visitors and society groups
are welcome. The superb Concra Wood Golf & Country Club in
Castleblayney is just 15km from Carrickmacross.
Just south of the town is the Carrickmacross School of Equitation
set in 243 hectares of woodland and parkland. This family run
equestrian centre caters for beginners to the advanced rider. The
Carrickmacross area is also well known for the quality of it's
fishing lakes. These include Lough Boughagh , Lough na Garnaman and
Creevy Lough. The game angling fisheries area are managed and
stocked by the Carrickmacross and District Anglers Club. Day permits
are available.
10km east of Carrickmacross is the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in
Innishkeen. The Centre houses exhibitions on local history and on
Kavanagh, a sixty-seat Audio- Visual Theatre, and a Research
Library. Also on view are twelve specially commissioned paintings
illustrating Kavanagh's epic poem "The Great Hunger", a miniature
model depicting Kavanagh's classic, "A Christmas Childhood",
Kavanagh's Death Mask and other memorabilia associated with the
poet.
