Castleblaney
is a town in the eastern part of County Monaghan. Its name is often
shortened to "Blaney" by locals. The town lies near the border with
Co Armagh.
Castleblaney is located in the heart of typical South Ulster drumlin
and lake countryside. The town itself lies on the north western
shores of Lough Muckno - the largest lake in County Monaghan. The
River Fane flows eastwards from the lake to the Irish Sea at Dundalk
in County Louth.
Castleblaney was founded on the site of an early Christian Church
and the area was originally controlled by the local Hanratty
chieftains. The town was built by the Blayney family and the
Courthouse, Market House and Church of Ireland church were added in
the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Castleblaney is an ideal base for the keen angler. In addition to
Lough Muckno there are also a number of smaller lakes in the
area including the Gas Lake, Smith’s Lake, Malone’s Lake and
Killygola that provide the angler with a variety of quality angling
venues. Lough Muckno itself covers an area of 325 hectares with
depths to 20m.
There are a number of
excellent fishing locations on this lake including White Island,
Black Island, Concra Wood, South Lodge and Toome Point. This lake
holds huge stocks of fish including bream, rudd, roach, hybrids,
tench, perch and pike.
Overlooking Lough Mucknoo is the superb Concra Wood Golf &
Country Club. The lake and the golf course are gloriously
entwined. Eleven holes lure you to the water’s edge, promising
danger and excitement time and again. It makes Concra Wood a
demanding and beautiful test of golf, whatever your ability.
Also overlooking Lough Mucknoo is Hope Castle. This castle
was named after Henry Hope, owner of one of the largest uncut
diamonds in the world. He bought the estate in 1870 and it is now
part of Lough Muckno Leisure Park which incorporates the Lough
Muckno Waterski & Wakeboarding Club. The club caters for both
beginner waterskiers and wakeboarders (riders) and also those at
competition level.
Castleblaney stages an annual summer festival in July each year
called the Muckno Mania Festival.
This wonderful
festival includes a variety of activities aimed at all sections of
the community and primarily promotes arts, music, dance, creative
arts, sports, and crafts. The town also has a fully automated Ten
Pin Bowling Complex which is open all year.
