Emyvale is a
village a in the north of County Monaghan. It sits upon the main
Dublin to Derry road, about 10 km north of Monaghan Town.
A Bronze Age tomb was unearthed in Emyvale in 1959 indicating
that the area has been inhabited for over 3000 years. Unfortunately,
the urn and other artefacts found with the tombwere inadvertently
destroyed. An iron
sculpture of Three Ducks at the northern approach road to
Emyvale represents the industrial aspect of life in the area, while
the iron sculpture of a Fisherman at the southern approach
represents the social life.
There are several lakes around the village. Emy Lake is a
renowned Trout Fishery and also attracts many swimmers during
the summer months. There are some lovely walking tours in and around
the village which highlight local beauty spots and historical sites.
These sites include a 10th century Viking fort and Tully Fort. The
latter Fort was established by the powerful McKenna family.
The famous Castle Leslie Estate is just 5km south-east of
Emyvale. |
