Newbliss is a
village in County Monaghan . This Quaker-named village is located
15km south-west of Monaghan town and 6km east of Clones.
Newbliss is a quiet village with a wide main street indicating its
origins as an estate village. The Garran Portal Tomb and the
Lisnadarragh Wedge Tomb which are located in the Newbliss area
are fairly accessible and are remnants of an historic past.
At Annaghmakerrig, just 1km from the centre of Newbliss, is the
Tyrone Guthrie Centre .This centre is a residential arts centre
dedicated to the great theatre director Sir Tyrone Guthrie. It is
surrounded by 450 acres of forest and lake which give it a seclusion
and tranquility idyllically suited to its new role as a workplace
for artists. Also of
artistic note is the Flat Lake Cultural Festival which is
held around the big house in Hilton Park 6km east of Newbliss. The
festival is held around the third weekend in August and is a
remarkably high-powered gathering of poetry, literature, music and
humour. The Hilton
Park Demense now provides the venue for the Clones Golf Club. |
