Scotshouse is
a small rural village in the western part of Co Monaghan. It is
situated about 8km south of the border town of Clones and lies close
to the borders with both County Cavan and County Fermanagh.
Scotshouse takes its
name from William Scots, a Cromwellian soldier, who settled in the
area around 1650. But settlement in the area goes back much further
than this. Remnants of an ancient border - the Black Pigs Dyke - run
through the locality. This fortification was erected as a defensive
line to protect the ancient Kingdom of the Ulaidh (Ulster).
Scotshouse was the birthplace of Arthur Griffiths. He served
as President of Dáil Éireann from January to August 1922, and was
head of the Irish delegation at the negotiations in London that
produced the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.
Just 1km north of Scotshouse is the Clones Golf Club. The
club was established in 1913. The current 18 hole course, laid over
approximately 155 acres of rolling parklands, was designed by Dr
Arthur Spring and was officially opened by Barry McGuigan in 2001.
In 2005 another 2 holes were brought into play and the club must be
unique in being one of the few 20 hole courses in these islands,
thus ensuring that fairways are appropriately rested throughout the
winter months. The
Flat Lake Literary & Arts Festival is a sumptuous weekend of
creativity set in the glorious Hilton Park Estate just outside
Scotshouse. It offers just about everything including film
screenings, theatrical debuts, literary and historical talks, heated
debate, poetry recitals, eccentric discourse, children's
entertainment, sticks of rock, campfire camaraderie and delicious
food and drink. The Flat Lake Literary & Arts Festival is where
'High Art' meets 'Popular Culture'. |
