Scotstown village
is located approximately 10 km northwest of Monaghan Town. Scotstown
is situated along the banks of a tributary of the river Blackwater
at the meeting place of five district roads. These roads link
Fivemiletown, Roslea, Smithboro, Monaghan and Tydavnet / Emyvale.
Scotstown village acts as a service centre for the surrounding
agricultural hinterland. The village is surrounded by a number of
gently sloping hills. To the north lies Sliabh Beagh - a vast region
of upland moors, rising to a height of 1200 feet above sea-level.
In the surrounding area to the village are Hollywood Lake, Rally
School Ireland and the Mullaghmore Equestrian Centre.
Between Scotstown and
Ballinode is Co Monaghan’s most favourite outdoor swimming facility
- Hollywood Lake, in Hollywood Park. This outstanding
recreation amenity features a 7th century crannóg, which was the
ancestral dwelling of a branch of the McMahon clan. In summer
Hollywood is a favourite haunt of family groups, while the more
active can indulge their penchant for life-saving courses, boating
and other aquatic sports. This excellent amenity is well
sign-posted. Rally
School Ireland & Drift School Ireland is based just outside
Scotstown. The school provides action packed days where you get to
drive real rally cars on a purpose built venue designed to get you
very sideways!
You can get a rally
driving experience in Mark II Escorts, BMW's, Subaru Impreza's,
Porsche, Nissan and many more. All levels of drivers from beginners
upwards are catered for.
The Mullaghmore Equestrian Centre is an AIRE approved centre
family run by the McCarra family who have been involved in all
aspects of the horse industry for years. Lessons are available all
week from beginners to more advanced levels. Livery is also
available. The centre is a few kilometres east of Scotstown.
In October, Scotstown also hosts a traditional music festival,
Scoil Cheoil na Botha, which features workshops, concerts and
sessions.
