Daingean -
formerly Philipstown - is situated on the Grand Canal in Co Offaly.
The Grand Canal links Dublin and the River Shannon.
When County Offaly was planted with English setters during the reign
of Philip and Mary (1557), the centre of the planted lands became
Philipstown, the county town of the King's county.(Offalys former
name). As the county was enlarged Philipstown was too far away from
places in the south, and so Tullamore became the county capital in
1833.
The court-house in Daingean dates from the 1800s and in the burial
ground in the town are the remains of Lewis Carroll's grandfather,
Charles Dodgson. The remains of an old 1550s fort can still be seen
in the town. At Molesworth street is the Grand Canal line (1797) and
also the old Daingean reformatory which now is a warehouse for the
National Museum.
On the outskirts of Daingean is the Castle Barna Golf Club.
This beautiful course nestles along the banks of the Grand Canal on
it's route from Dublin to the Shannon. The greens are immaculately
manicured and the fairways are always in mint condition. The course
is interspersed with many trees, some of which are hundreds of years
old.
Just 7km north of Daingean is Croghan Hill. Croghan Hill is the
remains of an extinct volcano and rises from the Bog of Allen.
Though only 234m high it commands extensive views of the surrounding
midland counties, across the flat, low-lying expanse of the Bog of
Allen. The mound at the summit is thought to be a bronze age burial
place.
10km from Daingean is the Annaharvey Equestrian Centre. The
Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre is 15km to the west of the town. |
