Edenderry is a
market town in the north east of County Offaly, Ireland. It is near
the borders with Counties Kildare, Meath and Westmeath. It is
situated on the Enfield-Tullamore road at the edge of the Bog of
Allen. The Grand Canal passes immediately south of Edenderry on its
journey from Dublin to the Shannon.
Also just south of the town is Blundell's Castle which became the
home of the second Marquess of Downshire. Most of the town was built
by the Downshire family, including the Corn Market (Court House)
dating from the 1820's and lately restored. Edenderry got its name (Eadon
Doire in Irish) from the great oak woods that dominated the area in
times past. With its
historic location on the edge of the English Pale it is no surprise
to find that Edenderry has numerous border castles in its vicinity.
Several of these belonged to the Bermingham family. 4km north of
Edenderry are the remains of the medieval Bermingham church and
castle of Carrickoris.
There are many border castles in the area around Edenderry, which
stands near the edge of the English Pale, some of which belonged to
the Bermingham family. Three miles north of Edenderry the remains of
the medieval Bermingham church and castle of Carrickoris stand on
Carrick Hill.
Edenderry Golf Club is located to the north of the town. It
has been in existence since 1910 Eddie Hackett designed the current
layout on the natural peat that is synonymous with this part of the
country. Eddie used the natural terrain to create a superb golf
course that is playable all year round. The course has an abundance
of mature trees and strategically placed bunkers making it a
challenging, but fair test of golf for the experienced and beginner
alike. Edenderry Golf Club has recently completed its state-of-the
-arts clubhouse, where the visitor and members alike can relax and
enjoy the memory of a fine days golf.
Just over the Kildare border from Edenderry is Highfield Golf
Club. This is a real gem of a golf course tucked away in the
rolling countryside. The natural contours of the old Duggan Family
Estate provided the perfect blank canvas for this naturally derived
golf course. The unique Tee-off is from the roof of the Canadian Log
Clubhouse This fine 18 hole parkland golf course is eco-designed
with innovative water features and wild life habitats preserved.
Edenderry has lots to offer. Located beside the Grand Canal way
it is an ideal base for angling, cycling and walking . You can
parachute at the Irish Parachute Club in nearby Clonbullogue. There
are numerous Monastic/Heritage sites in the area to visit as well as
the Japanese Gardens and the Curragh Racecourse. The Tullamore Dew
Visitor Centre, Clonmacnoise, Birr Castle and its world famous
Telescope,Trim Castle, Lough Boora Bog and Parklands and the Slieve
Bloom Walks are all easily accessible from the town.
