Ferbane a
village in north west Offaly. This picturesque village is siuated on
the banks of the River Brosna and on the main road between Birr and
Athlone. The name of the town is said to come from the white bog
cotton which grows abundantly in the surrounding Bog of Allen. The
Grand Canal, which links up with the River Shannon, passes just
south of the town.
A Heritage Centre has opened recently in Ferbane and already
the town has been treated to photographic, art and craft
exhibitions. The latest project is an effort to collect local
history and folklore from the older generation in the community. In
the summertime the town plays host to the Ferbane Festival Fayre.
The Offaly Way can be availed of by walkers and hikers.
Ferbane is rich in heritage. In 492 Saint Cynoc, a contemporary of
St Patrick’s, established a monastery at Gallen just 1km south of
the village. The Gallen Cross, an unusual cross of the
Christian period, can be viewed in the grounds of Gallen Priory, as
well as a collection of early Christian grave slabs. Sir John
MaCoghlan built Coole Castle on the banks of the Brosna in 1575. It
was the last of the MacCoghlan castles to be built. He erected it as
a present to his second wife Sabina O'Dallachain. The historic site
of Clonmacnois is just 18km from Ferbane.
