Kilcormac is a
small town on the Tullamore-Birr road, at the foothills of the
Slieve Bloom mountains. The town was called Frankford for some 400
years before reverting to its ancient title. Frankford would appear
to relate to Francis Magawley who founded the town on a ford across
the Silver River.
A short distance from Kilcormac is the Lough Boora Parklands. This
is a unique outdoor landscape in the heart of Ireland. Large tracts
of cutaway bogland have been allowed to revert back to nature making
this an ideal area for outdoor enthusiasts. The area has lots of fun
things to do including 50 km of Walking Routes, Cycle Paths, outdoor
Sculpture Park, Fishing Lakes, Bird Watching including Grey
Partridge, Picnic Area as well as abundant Wildlife & Flora. The
parklands are open all year round with free car parking and also
free admission.
Kilcormac lies along the route of the Offaly Way. This is a linear
walking route of some 38km linking the Slieve Bloom Way (at
Cadamstown) to the Sli Mor (at Lemanaghan). It includes sections of
riverbank, stretches of bogland, green mass paths and quiet country
roadways.
Kilcormac is centrally placed to explore Co Offaly. It is 20km from
the county capital of Tullamore and just 15km from the heritage town
of Birr with its castle, gardens, science museum and famous giant
telescope. |
