Kinnitty is a
small village situated on the Birr-Mountmellick road, some 13km east
of Birr. It is a
village known for its pleasant ambience and historic sites. One of
the more unusual sites is the Kinnitty Pyramid situated in
the graveyard of the Church of Ireland. It stands 30 feet in height
and was built as a crypt by Lt. Col Richard Wesley Bernard for his
family on his return from Egypt in the mid 1800's. It is a replica
of the Pyramid of Cheop in Egypt. Building began in 1830 and was
completed in 1834. Kinnitty Castle hotel is situated less than 3km
from the village and is a popular destination for castle weddings.
Leap Castle – reputably Irelands most haunted castle - is 10km from
Kinnitty.
To the south and east of Kinnity rise the Slieve Bloom mountains
which are full of wonderful scenery and have a well signposted
walking route (The Slieve Bloom Way).
Other attractions in the region around Kinnitty are the heritage
town of Birr, Birr Castle Gardens and Giant Telescope, Lough
Boora Parklands, the ancient monastic site of Clonmacnoise,
Belvedere House and Gardens and the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre . |
