Rhode is a
village located in the north-eastern part of Co Offaly some 10km
west of Edenderry. Situated within one mile of Rhode village is the
Grand Canal.
The village sits on an "island" of high ground surrounded by an
expanse of raised bog which forms part of the Bog of Allen. The
modern village of Rhode developed around a peat-burning power plant.
The plant was shut down in 2003 and its cooling towers were
demolished in 2004, removing a highly visible landmark.
There are the ruins of many castles in the area. The ruins of
Toberdaly castle once the demesne of the Nesbitt family commands
a splendid view of the surrounding countryside. On the road to
Edenderry is Ballybrittan Castle, with its well preserved castle
tower and once the home of the Warrens, a prominent English military
family of the late 1550s.
The area surrounding Rhode is the centre of top quality outdoor
pursuits, such as hill walking, archaeology, geology, shooting,
fishing, golf and wildlife. It is in the centre of the Bog of Allen
which is a haven for all sorts of wildlife and breathtaking scenery. |
