Shinrone is a
small village in south west Offaly. It is located 15km south of the
heritage town of Birr and just 9km from Roscrea in co Tipperary.
Just outside Shinrone is Bellefield House and Garden. This
wonderful Georgian farmhouse with original walled garden dates from
approximately 1840. The original two acre walled garden has been
lovingly restored. The garden features a folly, a large glasshouse,
a collection of fuchsia and species lilies. The woodland garden at
the side of the house is awash with snowdrops, cyclamen, wood
anemone and daffodils in spring.
The southern thumb of Offaly, incorporating the neat villages of
Dunkerrin, Moneygall as well as Shinrone, is Ely O'Carroll land. It
is an area rich in history. The famous Cistercian Abbey - Mount
Saint Joseph Abbey - is on the road to Roscrea.
American President
Barack Obama's earliest known relative is Joseph Kearney, whose
family moved from Shinone to Moneygall. |
