Arigina is a small village in Co Roscommon located close to the south western shores of Lough Allen.

The village is situated in a picturesque valley with breathtaking scenery all around. There is little in the landscape to suggest that this was the main coal mining centre in Ireland for centuries. However situated at the top of ‘Arigna mountain’ overlooking scenic Lough Allen is the Arigna Mining Experience. This exhibition traces 400 years of mining in the area. All the tour guides are ex-miners, ensuring that they can relate a history of a life that no longer exists in a way which is interesting and educational for all ages.

Lough Allen lies between the rugged Arigna Mountains to the west and Slieve Anierin ( Iron Mountains) to the east. The lake is a long, narrow triangle 6kmwide at its north end where the River Shannon enters and less than 1km wide at its southern tip at Drumshanbo. The Arigna River is one of several rivers which flow into Lough Allen. These inflowing rivers are all good trout fisheries, with good access from the many bridges that cross them. The lake, too, has plenty of trout but is better known as a coarse fishery. Lough Allen offers pike to 20 pounds and bream to 4 pounds plus, as well as roach, hybrids and perch and there are tench, rudd and eel as well.

Arigna is surrounded by a number of walking routes and scenic drives. The Miner’s Way and the Historical Trail area a network of walking paths which make their way through adjoining parts of Countries Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo. The Miner’s Way follows many of the paths used by the miners going to work in the Arigna coal mines. This section makes a circuit starting from Arigna and travelling via Keadue, Ballyfarnon and Corrie Mountain to return to Arigna. The Historical Trail section runs in a great loop, leaving the Miner’s Way at Keadue and running to Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, Carrowkeel, Castlebaldwin, Highwood and returning to the Miner’s Way at Ballyfarnon. The Arigna Scenic Drive is a 60km scenic drive through the eastern part of Connaught.

The magnificent Lough Kee Forest Park is 20km south west of Arigna.
