Ballaghaderreen
is a cathedral town located in north-west Roscommon close to the
border with Co Mayo. It is situated close to the River Lung.
Historically Ballaghaderreen has been the gateway to the West of
Ireland. It is an ideal location for touring the west and
north-west and is within easy reach of Counties Mayo, Roscommon,
Sligo, Leitrim.
St. Nathy's Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen is a gothic-style
building that was commissioned in 1855 with its imposing tower added
later (1912). Inside, visitors can view the timbered ceiling of the
nave, paintings of The Annunciation and, on the chancel roof, angels
bearing verses from the Benedicite. The cathedral also boasts a
variety of notable stain glass windows.
Dr Douglas Hyde Summer School of Traditional Irish Music is a
week long festival of traditional Irish music, art and culture held
in Ballaghaderreen at the start of every July . This festival
commemorates the life of Douglas Hyde who was the first President of
Ireland and was also the founder of the Gaelic League. Hyde had a
strong interest in the Irish language, music and culture. His
homestead is located on the eastern side of Ballaghaderreen.
The Lung Valley in the environs of Ballaghaderreen is an
angler’s haven with its rivers and lakes and offers some of the best
coarse fishing waters in Ireland. It is first-rate for bream, trout,
roach, rudd, perch, tench, eel, pike and hybrids. The Lung Valley is
a developed stretch of water with easy access, off the road safe
parking, nature walks, slipways for boats, fishing stands etc. There
is a disabled fishing stand on the Lung River and Lough Gara Lake
for physically impaired anglers. The Ballaghaderreen & District
Angling Club have a substantial list of Angling Fixtures on the Lung
Waters throughout the year.
Ballaghaderreen Golf Course is located 4km outside the town.
This deceptively difficult 9-hole course has alternate tees for the
back nine. Strategically placed trees provide the main challenge to
an otherwise enjoyable round.
