Roscommon Town
is the county town of Roscommon. It is located 6km from the river
Suck and 9km from the shores of Lough Ree. The town is rich in
historical associations and contains many impressive buildings.
Roscommon offers the visitor a wide range of shopping, restaurants,
pubs, coffee shops, amenities and activities.
Roscommon Town is home to several historical sites which include
Roscommon castle built in 1269. The ruins of this castle are a
national monument and are located in the award winning Loughnaneane
Park. The Dominican Friary built during the 13th century is
worth a visit as is the Roscommon Jail. Built in the early 18th
century this building was originally a jail, then a lunatic asylum
and later a private hospital. The jail had the dubious distinction
of having had a female executioner (know as Lady Betty)
The Roscommon County Museum and Tourist Office is located in
the former Presbyterian Church and its Manse .The church was built
in the 1863 was renovated in 1991.
County Roscommon as a whole is home to several bodies of water, such
as the Shannon, Boyle and Suck Rivers, as well as the many lakes
that dot the county. This in turn provides a prime location for the
angling enthusiast. Roscommon Town is ideally placed for fishing on
Lough Ree and the Shannon and Suck rivers.
Roscommon Golf Club is located 1km from the town. This fine
18 hole championship course is situated on beautiful parkland near
the old Mote Park Estate. Originally a nine-hole course it was
extended to include nine additional new holes by architect Eddie
Connaughton. The blend of old and new has been a great success,
creating an exciting and demanding new challenge over a 6,290
metres.
Roscommon Race Course is located less than 2km from the town centre
and hosts race meetings in summer and autumn.
In 2007 the Roscommon Drama Festival returned after an
absence of 27 years. It is now an important part of the cultural and
social calendar of Roscommon. The Lamb Festival is held in the town
in early May. This festival is a celebration of family fun, great
food, farming, heritage and community spirit in Co Roscommon which
(unknown to some!) has the highest lamb output in Ireland.
