Strokestown is
a town in the eastern part of County Roscommon, Ireland. It is
located 15km north of Roscommon Town. Strokestown has the
distinction of having the second widest street in Ireland, after
O'Connell Street in Dublin. There are a number of annual events in
the town such as the Strokestown Poetry Festival, the Strokestown
Agricultural Show and Féile Frank McGann, a traditional music
festival in memory of Roscommon born bodhran player Frank McGann.
Strokestown ‘s wide main street leads directly to the gates of
Strokestown Park House. The town was laid out and the house designed
for the Mahon family by Richard Cassells, one of the best
neo-Palladian architects of the 18th century in Ireland.
Stokestown Park House has the longest herbaceous border in
Ireland and a beautiful natural landscape as its surroundings. This
Georgian mansion is well preserved with its original furnishings and
guided tours are available. Few Irish houses open to the public are
so authentic in their presentation of a period life-style. The
books, the linen, the family photos, the children’s toys are all
there to be seen.
Located in the stable yards of Strokestown Park House is the Famine
Museum which provides a sharp contrast to the house and pleasure
gardens. A combination of original documents and images from the
Strokestown Park collection are used to explain the circumstances of
the Great Irish Famine of the 1840's. This collection boasts an
extensive range of papers including actual letters written by the
tenants on the Strokestown Estate at the time of the famine.
