Calry is a
rural area in North Sligo. Calry stretches along the north shore of
Lough Gill and the north bank of the Garavogue river. The name of
Calry is derived from Calraidhe, the territory of the descendants of
Cal. The two largest islands on Lough Gill, namely, Church Island or
Inis Mor, and Cottage Island, each contain ecclesiastical remains.
An early Christian ruin lies on Church Island and belonged to the
O'Rourkes, chieftains of Breifne. |
