Castlebaldwin
is a quaint village in the heart of County Sligo near the border
with County Leitrim. Being halfway between Sligo town and Carrick on
Shannon it has a lot of things to do. It has lovely views of Ox
Mountains and is a good base for hill walking. Castlebaldwin is home
to Taylor's Art Gallery with five large exhibition rooms with
exhibits from artists across the globe. The castle outside the
village is a fortified 17th century house rather than a medieval
castle, with gun slits in the walls.
Castlebaldwin is on the north western shores of Lough Arrow and is
the closest village to the Carrowkeel Neolithic passage tomb
cemetery. Carbon dating places the tombs at between 5400 and 5100
years old, so that they predate the Pyramids on Egypt's Giza plateau
by 500-800 years.
Carrowkeel is one of
the big four passage tomb cemeteries in Ireland (the other three are
Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange), Loughcrew, and Carrowmore). Carrowkeel is
set on high ground above Lough Arrow. There are fourteen passage
tombs in Carrowkeel. Some can be entered by crawling through a
narrow passage. Six more passage tombs are located close by in the
Keshcorran complex.
Lough Arrow has long been recognised as one of the great limestone
Loughs. The trout average 1.5lbs but 6 or 7lb fish to the fly are
not uncommon. The season on Lough Arrow does not open until April
1st and runs until September 30th. |
