Cliffony is a
small village located at the base of the majestic Benbulben and
Benwhisken mountains. It is 25km from Sligo Town and enjoys great
views of Donegal Bay and Mullaghmore Harbour.
At Creevykeel, just 2km from Cliffoney, is a fine example of a Court
Cairn (tomb). Dating from the Neolithic period, the tomb was
excavated in 1935 and shortly afterwards restored. The excavations
uncovered four cremation burials, decorated and undecorated
Neolithic pottery, flint arrow heads, polished stone axes and other
artefacts including a chalk ball.
The Queen Maeve International Summer School Festival is a week long
festival held annually in Cliffony. It is dedicated to the
traditions of Irish music and song and features a weeklong series of
classes for different levels including master, advanced,
intermediate and beginner. The visitor can learn tin whistle,
fiddle, flute, and other instruments and also take part in night
time recitals.
Cliffony is less than 5km from Mullaghmoere and 14km from Kinlough
on the northern shores of Lough Melvin. |
