Collooney is
situated on a small hill in picturesque countryside 11km due south
of Sligo Town. Located
in the 'Gap of Collooney', it looks out over the Ox Mountains,
Knocknarea, Benbulben, Slieve Deane and the Curlews. The river
Owenmore flows through the village and the main Sligo - Dublin train
stops at the local station.
Dominating the landscape is the spire of the Catholic Church. This
1847 Church was designed by Sir John Benson, noted Victorian
architect and a native of Collooney, and is well worth a visit. The
rising of 1798, a milestone in Irish history is commemorated by the
Teeling monument in the village.
Near the Collooney is Markree Castle dating from the 17th century
with 19th century additions. This was the home and demesne of the
Cooper family and is now a hotel
The wonderful Castle Dargan Golf Resort is located just 5km east of
Colloney. |
