Enniscrone is
a seaside resort on the shores of Killala Bay in north west Co
Sligo. It is situated near the county border with Mayo, just 10 km
north of Ballina. With its safe sandy beach , renowned seaweed baths
and fabulous golf course Enniscrone has been a popular family
holiday venue for generations. The town’s name is variously spelt
Enniscrone, Inniscrone and Inishcrone.
Enniscrone’s blue
flag beach stretches for over 3km and is watched over by lifeguards
in the busy summer period. The ‘Valley of Diamonds’ is one of the
hidden attractions along the beach. It is the largest of
volcano-like compositions among the long-grassed sand dunes.
Enniscrone beach also has good surfing conditions suitable for the
novice and intermediate surfer. Two surf schools are available
locally with surfboards and wet suits provided.
Kilcullen’s Baths have been on the Enniscrone’s sea front for more
than a hundred years. These wonderful baths feature large roll top
baths, Turkish style steam boxes, piping hot seawater and freshly
gathered seaweed. The baths are ideal for unwinding, soothing aches
and pains and restoring a sense of wellbeing.
The superb Enniscrone
Golf Club on the outskirts of the town was founded in 1918. It was
redesigned by Eddie Hackett in 1974 and again by Donald Steel in
2001. This championship course is one of Ireland's finest
traditional golf links. The golf course affords sweeping panoramic
views over Killala Bay, Bartra Island and sandy beaches with Nephin
and the Ox Mountains forming the backdrop. In addition to the
championship links known as The Dunes, there is also the beautiful 9
hole Scurmore course.
Iceford Stables are situated 3.5km from Enniscrone. This equestrian
centre caters for all ages and levels they will ensure an
unforgettable equestrian experience. Services provided include
hacking, group and private lessons, beach rides and pony camps.
Other tourist amenities in Enniscrone include Waterpoint (an
all-weather Aqua Leisure Centre), a supervised playground, amusement
park for children, crazy golf, pitch and putt and tennis court. With
its location on the mouth of the fabled Moy Salmon River and on the
shores of Killala Bay, Enniscrone is a very popular spot with both
river and sea anglers.
During the summer months there are lots of events and activities to
keep everyone entertained.. One of the highlights of the summer is
the Black Pig Festival which celebrates the demise of a fabled wild
boar that ran amok in the town. The festival is four days of fun for
everyone with a carnival, street parades, live music, go-karting and
puppet shows. The main event of the festival is the Raft Race when
everyone takes to the water in a variety of crafts and rafts.
Recently horse racing on the beach has been revived after almost 100
years. |
