Mullaghmore is
a seaside resort in North Co Sligo located on a small peninsula
between Cliffoney and Grange. It has a beautiful setting with
panoramic views that stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the west
over Donegal Bay towards the Dartry Mountains to the north.
Mullaghmore is 15km from Bundoran in Co Donegal and also 15km from
the Kinlough on the shores of Lough Melvin.
Mullaghmore is a popular holiday destination as well as a fishing
village. It has a wonderful 3km long blue flag sandy beach . The
beach is safe for swimming, windsurfing and water sports. In recent
years Mullaghmore has become known as one of the best big wave
surfing locations in the world.
There is a quaint 19th century harbour in the centre of the village
from which sailing boats and fishing vessels come and go. The
harbour is the base for licensed angling/passenger boats for
charter, sea angling and trips to Inishmurray Island. St. Molaise
build a monastic settlement on Innismurray in the 6th century and it
was inhabited from thereafter until the 1940s. The restored remains
of the original beehive cells can still be seen there. A natural
lake in the centre of the island has become a sanctuary for sea
birds. Classiebawn
Castle is located just outside Mullaghmore . The castle was built by
Lord Palmerston, a former British Prime Minister but was completed
after his death by William Francis Cowper his stepson and successor.
The property later passed to Lord Louis Mountbatten, great grandson
of Queen Victoria. One
of the highlight of the summer in Mullaghmore is the All Ireland
Donkey Derby which takes in August each year. Donkeys are brought
from all over Ireland to compete and the event raises money for
charity.
In addition to the
donkey heats and finals, there are children’s entertainments, craft
stalls, live music and a cowboy riding display.
The area has many attractions of historic interest in north Sligo
area around Mullaghmore such as the grave of W.B. Yeats, Inishmurray
Island, Lissadell House, Streedagh Strand, and the Creevykeel Court
Tomb. |
