Riverstown is
a small village in the heart of Co Sligo, located 20km south of
Sligo town. As the name implies, Riverstown lies between two rivers
– the Unshin river and Douglas river
At the centre of this quaint village is the Sligo Folk Park. At the
end of May each year the Folk Park hosts The Annual Vintage Day.
This is Sligo’s largest vintage day event and it’s a great family
day out with all kinds of curiosities from the widest possible range
of steam engines, vintage cars and tractors. There’s also threshing
and working displays including woodturning and butter making.
The James Morrison
Traditional Music Festival is held annually during the weekend
of the August Bank Holiday. The festival commemorates the musical
genius of James Morrison who was born in Drumfin near Riverstown in
1893. He emigrated to America in 1915 and became renowned for his
band which performed in the Irish Dance halls of Manhattan in New
York. He also a composed and taught Irish music. He, together with
Michael Coleman and Paddy Killoran introduced the “Sligo Style” of
fiddle playing which has continued to be played in New York to the
present day. |
