Rosses Point
is a seaside village located on a peninsula of the same name which
guards the northern entrance to Sligo Bay. It is situate just 8km
from Sligo Town.
This friendly seaside resort is widely known for its long, safe,
sandy beaches which are popular for walking and swimming all year
round.
Kitesufing is
become increasingly popular and lessons are available locally. Two
of the beaches have blue flag status.
Rosses Point is also home to Co. Sligo Golf Club, which hosts
the annual West of Ireland Championship ( Rory McIlroy was a winner
here in 2005 & 2006). The course has undoubtedly one of the most
scenic locations in Ireland perched on cliffs that tower over three
stunning beaches overlooking the Atlantic and with Benbulben ever
present in the background. Besides the superb views, the golf course
offers a truly challenging round. The traditional links layout
utilized the natural contours of the dune-covered landscape
resulting in a course filled with dramatic undulations, elevated
tees, and raised plateau greens.

national and international competitions. The summer months see a
full range of fixtures in the sailing calendar. August sees the
premier annual Cruiser Event, with the Sligo Park Ladies’ Cup –
racing for the oldest sporting trophy in the world.
Rosses Point has a number of iconic landmarks and sculptures. The
point guards Sligo Harbour and is marked by the Metal Man
lighthouse, a 3.7 metre high guardian statue placed offshore by
local seafarers in 1821. The "Waiting on Shore" monument is situated
near the local RNLI lifeboat station, and depicts a woman holding
her arms out to sea. This sculpture reflects the age-old anguish of
a seafaring people who watched and waited for the safe return of
loved ones .It is to honour the memory of those who sailed, or were
lost at sea. The
Rosses Point Lifeboat Station is built next to the pier which is
the base for a number of fishing vessels. Sea Angling and Boat
Charters also operate from the pier and offer a variety of services
including deep sea angling, reef fishing, shark fishing Coney Island
taxis and eco tourism cruises.
Elsinore Lodge in Rosses Point was the seat of the Middleton Family
where the Yeats brothers spent many a summer with their cousins. The
house was built by the pirate captain John Black or Black Jack, and
it is still said to be haunted by him.
North of Rosses Point marine archeologists have recently uncovered a
wreck of the Spanish Armada which was storm-driven upon this coast
in September of 1588.
