Strandhill is
a village that nestles between the Atlantic seaboard and the western
foothills of Knocknarea Mountain. It is situated on the Cúil Irra
peninsula 8km west of Sligo Town
Today Strandhill is one of the top surfing venues in Ireland.
It is famed for its massive breaks and challenging waves. There are
a number of surf schools and a surf shop in the village. Beacuse of
the huge waves Strandhill beach itself is not safe for swimming, but
is ideal for walking with lovely views of Mullaghmore and Benbulben.
Strandhill Golf Club was founded in 1931 as a 9-hole and was
developed into an 18 hole course in 1973 (designed by Eddie
Hackett). The course has 5,675m of undulating fairways and
unforgiving short cuts making it a course to remember. Strandhill
Golf Club offers delightful views of the Knocknarea Mountain,
Ballisodare Bay and the Atlantic coastline of north Sligo
For pure luxury, pay a visit to Voya Seaweed Baths in Strandhill.
Patrons have the luxury of private rooms, each with its own
Victorian cast iron bath and steam unit. Imagine relaxing back into
a bath full of hot seawater and steamed seaweed. The heat releases
all the seaweed's rich, silky, essential oils so your body feels
smooth, buoyant and luxurious. Tiredness, tension, aches and pains
slip away. On the
summit of Knocknarea (1,070 ft), sits a megalithic cairn
where Maeve the legendary Queen of Connaught is reputedly buried.
This large cairn is about 55 metres wide and 10 metres high, making
it the largest such cairn in Ireland outside the Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange)
in Co Meath. Just over7km from Strndhill is the Carrowmore
megalithic burial chambers which pre-date Egypt’s pyramids and are
among the world’s oldest known structures.
Strandhill is home of The Warriors Run, one of Ireland's
toughest competitive races. Each year runners from all over Ireland
and abroad converge on Strandhill to follow in the footsteps of
Queen Maeve's ancient warriors. The Warriors Run takes competitors
from the Cannon Gun at the beachfront in Strandhill to the top of
Knocknarea, around Queen Maeve's Cairn and back to the beachfront
again. |
