Plumbridge is a small
village in central County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is a
crossroads village, standing on the banks of the Glenelly River. It
lies within the Strabane District Council area. There are roads
leading to Strabane, Newtownstewart, Cranagh, Gortin and Aghabrack.
The village enjoys the benefits of a strong sense of community
spirit, as do its counterparts at neighbouring Sperrin and Cranagh,
and have done much to enhance the quality of life for all those who
live in the locality.
Tourism is an increasingly important component of the local economy
and has been developed in sympathy with the area's status as "An
Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty". Plumbridge and the Sperrins in
general offer a complete taste of rural Ireland featuring
picturesque walking and cycling routes, peaceful picnic sites,
excellent accommodation facilities and an opportunity to sample a
tradition rich in myth and legends.
The Sperrins are littered with stone monuments placed here between
4000 and 2000BC. These ancient monuments are called megaliths. They
can take the form of stone circles, wedge tombs, court tombs or
dolmens. The tombs were constructed as monuments to the dead who
were sealed within them. Some of the tombs are particularly
fascinating as they often feature capstones weighing many tons,
balancing precariously on smaller upright stones. The methods by
which Neolithic man constructed such tombs is still not fully
understood. |
