Ardmore is a quaint
seaside resort and fishing village in south west Co Waterford. It is
situated just 12km east of Youghal in Co Cork.
On a hill above the village is a well-preserved 12th-century round
tower and the ruins of a Cathedral and oratory dating from the 13th
and 8th centuries respectively. These ecclesiastical ruins overlook
the beautiful sandy beaches and the quiet fishing harbour
Ardmore is a very popular family holiday resort. The beautiful beach
was one of the first in Ireland to be awarded the E.U. Blue Flag.
Ardmore has also been a past winner of Ireland's Tidiest Village
Award Ardmore is also
steeped in history. It is reputed to be the oldest Christian
settlement in Ireland. St. Declan lived in the region 350-450 AD and
brought Christianity to this area before the coming of St. Patrick.
St. Declan's feast day is "Pattern day" every 24th of July.
Situated on the cliff top in the village is the Ardmore Pottery and
Craft Shop. Here the visitor will find a range of hand thrown,
earthenware pots, assorted crafts and paintings of Irish design.
Located in the centre of the village is Ardmore Adventures - the
premier provider of outdoor adventure sports in West Waterford and
East Cork. Activities provided are sea kayaking, surfing, rock
climbing, powerboat trips and lifesaving courses
Ardmore - and west Waterford generally - is an ideal base for the
keen walker. Way-marked, long distance trails include St. Declan's
Way, an ancient pilgrims' path of some 94km which runs from Ardmore
through Cappoquin, Lismore, Ardfinnan and Cahir to Cashel.
There is a also a shorter way marked walk in Ardmore itself - "The
Cliff Walk". This is a very scenic 5km trail that includes the
Christian settlements founded by St. Declan. Maps are available
