The village of
Ballymacarbry in north Co Waterford enjoys a beautiful setting .
This quaint village nestles in between the Comeragh and
Knockmealdown Mountains on the banks of the River Nire. It is
situated 16km south of Clonmel and 24km north of Dungarvan. It is
just over an hour's drive from the provinces three principal cities,
Cork, Limerick and Waterford and just 20km from the motorway that
now links Cork and Dublin.
The area surrounding Ballymacarbry provides breathtaking scenery,
tremendous natural facilities and has something for everybody, be it
a mountain walk, fishing, golfing, sporting events or somewhere to
relax, unwind and enjoy yourself.
The beautiful Nire Valley has the terrain to suit every category of
walker from the experienced mountaineer to the complete beginner.
Nire Valley Failte, the local tourism association, has a series of
published walks and also runs an annual Comeragh Mountain Walking
Festival. Access to the East Munster Way long distance walking route
can be gained at Fourmilewater, a few miles north-west of
Ballymacarbry. The village also lies along the route of the Comeragh
Mountain Drive.
The fishing in the Nire Valley area is first rate, with good wild
brown trout fishing in the River Nire and River Suir. The Nire is a
tributary of the River Suir which is regarded as one of the best dry
fly rivers in Europe for trout. Clonanav Fly Fishing based in
Ballymacarbry is a specialist angling centre providing a range of
fly fishing services for the visiting angler. In business for over
20 years they have intimate knowledge of the local rivers and are
your one stop shop for all your fly fishing needs. They also have a
school which offers trout and salmon fishing courses throughout the
season for both beginners and experienced anglers.
Melody's Nire Valley Riding Stables is based in Ballymacarbry. This
long established equestrian centre can arrange treks through some of
the most beautiful scenery in Waterford.
The recently established Sean Kelly cycling tour passes through
Ballymacarbry and takes in two of Waterford's way marked cycle
routes. Based in Ballymacarbry, the keen cyclist can challenge
himself or herself to miles of mountainous roads in the Comeraghs or
the Knockmealdowns. |
