Bunmahon - or
Bonmahon - is a quaint coastal village in County Waterford. It is
situated at the mouth of the River Mahon approximately halfway
between Tramore and Dungarvan.
The wonderful beach in Bumahon has achieved Blue Flag Status. A
small headland protects the beach and there is an exhilarating walk
across the west end cliffs. The local Bunmahon Surf School provides
surf lessons for groups and individuals, kids surfing camps, board
and wetsuit hire. The school provides a safe and relaxed
introduction to this exhilarating sport. The blue flag beach is a
beach break with a sandy bottom making it ideal for beginner
surfers.
Although now a peaceful place dedicated to pleasure, Bunmahon was
once the centre of a thriving copper industry which flourished here
between 1824 and 1877 and employed up to 1300 people. The mines are
up to 400 metres deep and go out under the sea bed. The most
spectacular remains are the Cornish engine houses on the cliffs at
Tankardstown.
Bunmahon lies at the heart of the Copper Coast European Geopark.
This is one of the copper coast's unchanged areas as it has not been
touched by developers and boasts numerous beaches and wildlife. The
wildlife includes wild foxes, rabbits, and many different species of
birds.
Bunmahon lies along the route of the Copper Coast Drive. This
wonderfully scenic drive embraces the panoramic seascapes, cliffs,
bays and coves between Dungarvan and the major seaside resort of
Tramore
The year 2011 saw the return of the Bunmahon Triathlon, one of the
oldest triathlon races in Ireland. After a break of several years
the event came back bigger and better than ever. The setting is
ideal with a picture postcard coastline providing the backdrop to
the race course. |
