Cheekpoint is a
charming fishing village, set on a headland above the confluence of
the rivers Suir and the twin Rivers Barrow and Nore. It is also
close to the point where three counties meet – Waterford, Wexford
and Kilkenny. Cheekpoint is just over 11km from Waterford city.
The village has a long and rich maritime history. Lying beneath the
150 metre high Minaun Hill Cheekpoint has panoramic views of
Waterford Harbour and the 2131 ft. Barrow Bridge, which was once the
longest bridge in Ireland. The village has several award winning
pubs and seafood restaurants.
Above the village to the west is Faithlegg Forest, where the walker
can enjoy wonderful panoramic views over the Suir Estuary and the
wonderful Faithlegg Golf Club. This 72 par parkland golf course
measures almost 7,000 yards from the championship tees. Some sharp
slopes and borrows on the first rate greens, undulating fairways and
strategically placed water hazards are just some of the novel
features incorporated into this Patrick Merrigan designed course.
The Waterford Castle Golf Club (9km) is another fine golf course in
the locality.
Heritage Trail Walking Holidays have their headquarters in
Cheekpoint. They conduct guided walks in Waterford and the
south-east.
Cheekpoint lies along the route of the East Waterford Gaultier Coast
Drive. |
