Dunmore East is a
very attractive tourist and fishing village in south east County
Waterford. It is situated on the west side of Waterford Harbour.
With beautifully thatched houses, a Blue Flag Beach, golf course,
sailing club, striking red sandstone cliffs and some superb seafood
restaurants it is no surprise that Dunmore East is a very popular
family holiday destination. The sheltered harbour is visited each
year by ocean going yachts from Britain and the Continent.
Situated at a prime location in the Harbour of Dunmore East is the
Waterford Harbour Sailing Club. A large part of the activity during
the summer is taken up with Junior Sailing Courses. These courses
are run by the club in conjunction with ISA trained instructors and
cater for children from 10 years old to 18 years old.
The Dunmore East Adventure Centre has purpose built activity centre
at the waters edge in Dunmore Harbour. The Adventure Centre provides
land and water-based outdoor activities for both the complete
beginner and the practised expert. Activities include Archery,
Windsurfing, Orienteering, Kayaking, Sailing, Open Canoes, Pedal
Boats and Powerboating.
On the coast just north of the village is Dunmore East Golf Club.
This is an 18hole par 72 seaside course with breathtaking views of
the village and bay, the Hook Peninsula and Waterford Harbour. The
course offers challenging golf in idyllic surroundings to golfers
with high or low handicaps.
There are a number of licensed and insured Deep Sea Angling Charter
operators based in the Harbour. These include Dunmore East Angling
Charters and Dunmore East Deep Sea Charters. Fish available in local
waters include Conger, Ling, Pollack, Coalfish, Blue Shark, Bass,
Whiting, Gurnards, Founder, Dabs and Dogfish.
There is a magnificent scenic drive from Dunmore East along the edge
of Waterford Harbour to the small villages of Passage East and
Cheekpoint, 11 to 12 km up-river. Many places of historical interest
may be seen on this drive. |
