Kilmacthomas often
referred to locally as "Kilmac", is a town located right in the
heart of County Waterford. The town is built on the steep slopes on
either sides of the River Mahon.
West of Kilmacthomas are the foothills of the Comeragh mountains.
The twelve mountains in this range are very popular with mountain
climbers and hikers and offer many beautiful nature walks. The drive
through the mountain range and Nire Valley passes numerous
pre-historic sites. One of the main attractions of this area are the
Mahon Falls. The River Mahon flows from the Comeragh Mountains and
gathers force to create the Mahon Falls, a tall cascade on the river
that empties from a mountain lake.
The famous Copper Coast is only 10km south of Kilmacthomas. This
spectacular coastal stretch runs through 5 tiny picturesque
villages: Fenor, Annestown, Boatstrand, Bunmahon, Stradbally. It is
a great area for watersports and exploring beaches and harbours.
There are a few golf courses dotted around the region to give
golfers plenty of choice.
Flahavan's Mill in Kilmacthomas is the only surviving one of the
original 5 mills on the River Mahon. Flahavan's have been milling
Irish oats for 200 years, supplying breakfast porridge for
generations
In the early 1870s the influence of the industrial revolution
reached Kilmacthomas when the Waterford to Mallow railroad came to
town. Although the railway has long since gone, it has left behind a
fine example of a stone viaduct in the town spanning the Mahon
River.
Kilmacthomas is the birthplace of Tyrone Power, great grandfather of
the famous Hollywood star of the same name. |
