The town of Lismore
is beautifully situated on the banks of the river Blackwater and at
the foot of the Knockmealdown mountains.
Lismore's historic roots go back over a thousand years earlier, to
the foundation here in the year 636 of a monastery by St. Carthage
(also known as St. Mochuda). The town was substantially restructured
during the 19th century and is now one of Ireland's "Heritage
Towns".
The Lismore Heritage Centre occupies the old Courthouse. It features
an award winning audio visual display of Lismore history. Other
places of interest include St. Carthage Cathedral, St. Carthage
Parish Church and the iconic Lismore Castle.
Lismore Castle was originally built by King John who later handed it
over to the church. It remained a Bishop's Palace until 1589 when it
was acquired by Sir Walter Raleigh and then sold on to Richard
Boyle, first Earl of Cork, in 1602.
He was the celebrated
scientist whose name lives on in "Boyles Law" Much of the Castle
dates back to the early 17th century but there are parts that are as
early as 1127. The most recent rehabilitation of the Castle was
undertaken by the sixth Duke of Devonshire in 1840. Today Lismore
Castle is the private home of the Dukes of Devonshire, but Lismore
Castle Gardens are open to the public.
The Blackwater river which flows through Lismore is visited by
anglers from all over the world. Trout and salmon are the main
species of fish to be caught. Day licences are available. Just north
of the town is Lismore Golf Club. This fine 9-hole, mature parkland
course is located on the banks of the River Blackwater, beside
Lismore Castle.
The Lismore Music Festival is a gem of a Summer music/opera festival
and takes place each year over the June Bank Holiday weekend in the
stunning surroundings of Lismore Castle.
Immrama - The Lismore Festival of Travel Writing also takes place in
June each year. Focussing on travel writing and literature, a
different theme is explored annually. The programme includes
literary presentations by top national and international travel
writers and bi-lingual workshops augmented by ancillary events in
other areas of mainstream literature.
