Portlaw is a village
in east Co Waterford. It is situated some 19 km north-west of
Waterford City. It lies on the Clodagh river and is bounded on the
north by the River Suir with the Comeragh Mountains to the west.
Portlaw was originally built by the Malcolmsons as a model village
for the workers of their cotton-spinning mills. The village later
became the centre for the tannery industry in Ireland. The
Malcomsons were a Quaker family, and their religious ideals impacted
greatly on the Portlaw, with industrial houses and social networks
built as part of the planned village still forming a central part of
the streetscape today.
To the west of the village is the beautiful Curraghmore Estate, home
of the Marquis of Waterford and his ancestors since the 12th
century. This manor house has around 40 ha of land and is open for
visits all the year round.
Portlaw is on the Suir Valley Drive. |
