Villierstown is a
picturesque village in west County Waterford. It is situated on the
banks of the River Blackwater. Villierstown is located approximately
2.5km north west of the nearby village of Aglish. It is 8 kilometres
south of Cappoquin and 20 kilometres from both Dungarvan and Youghal.
Villierstown was built in the 18th century to service the linen
weaving industry. A legacy of this period is a number of quaint
stone cut houses. Villierstown is also characterized by landscaped,
planted open spaces, and stone boundary walls. These features have
helped the village to win a number of accolades in the National Tidy
Towns competition.
The village monument, church, and paved 'plaza' areas, all located
along the wide main street, serve as the central focal point of the
village. The Quay on the River Blackwater is less than half a
kilometre from the main street. It once served commercial traffic on
the river but is now a popular yachting, fishing and boating area.
The River Blackwater is renowned for its Wild Atlantic Salmon.
The church in Villierstown is built in the Queen Anne style and has
three beautiful stained glass windows. Dromana House, home of Emily
and James Villiers Stuart, is located in nearby Dromana Woods. The
Hindu-Gothic gate lodge on the road to Villierstown was built in the
19th Century to mark the marriage of a popular local landlord and
MP.
Villierstown lies along the route of the scenic Gaeltacht &
Galltacht Drive. The West Waterford Golf & Country Club at
Coolcormuck is 12km east of Villierstown. |
