Bunclody is a
small town in northwest Co Wexford. It is situated on the River
Slaney and lies on the border between counties Wexford and Carlow .
The Wicklow border is just a few kilometres further north while
Enniscorthy is 20km to the south.
Bunclody is an attractive town near the foot of Mount Leinster. Most
of the town is situated in Co Wexford but a small area at the north
end of town is located in Co Carlow.
Located on the northern edge of the town is the fabulous Bunclody
Golf and Fishing Club. This golf course is situated on 300 acres of
parkland in the former Hall-Dare Estate. Opened in 2009 it is
already rated in the top 100 courses in Ireland by Golf Digest.
Designed by Jeff Howes this championship course runs over 7000 yards
on the banks of the River Slaney and has a wide variety of holes to
satisfy the most discerning golfer.
Bunclody is also a popular angling destination. The Slaney is
a spring salmon fishery with the bulk of angling activity taking
place in the months of March to May. Good fishing for small wild
brown trout is also available on the river. There is generally a
good run of small sea trout, fish of between 12oz and 11b 8oz, in
late June and early July, with the best of the fishing between
Bunclody and Ballycarney Bridge.
Bunclody also has an annual festival called the Eileen Aroon
festival, which creates great activity in the town, with talent
competitions, free music on the square and lots of other activities
and events to suit all tastes. This festival is usually held on the
second week in July.
From Bunclody there are some lovely scenic drives along the Slaney
valley and to popular viewpoints on Mount Leinster. The town is also
located between the Wicklow mountains and the Blackstairs mountain
range. Two of Ireland's main waymarked hiking trails start close to
the town – the southern end of the Wicklow Way is at Clonegal (5km)
while the northern end of the South Leinster Way is at Kildavin
(4km).
Bunclody is an ideal base to explore the South East of Ireland.
Within one hour’s drive of the town are the heritage city of
Kilkenny, Glendalough, an early Christian monastic settlement in
stunning mountain scenery; the Viking town of Wexford with its
quaint narrow streets and Waterford city. |
