Campile is a
small village situated in the southwest Co Wexford. It situated
close to the head of a narrow inlet of Waterford Harbour. It is 14km
due south of New Ross
Campile is home to the ruins of Dunbrody Abbey. Dunbrody Abbey,
founded in 1170 is one of the finest examples of a Cistercian
Monastery in Ireland. The Abbey was founded in 1170 on the
instructions of Strongbow, by Herve de Montmorency after the Norman
invasion of Ireland. It was completed in about 1220.
Adjacent to the Abbey is Dunbrody Castle, and a visitor centre with
tea rooms and a craft shop. The Castle garden is the location for an
intricate yew hedge maze. Made with 1,500 yew trees, and gravel
paths, it is one of only two full size mazes in Ireland. Around the
outside of the maze lies a 9-hole pitch and putt course.
Other attractions in the region around Campile include the Dunbrody
Famine Ship, the J.F.K Homestead, the Hook Lighthouse, Waterford
Crystal and Kilmokea Country Manor & Gardens. The beautiful Blue
Flag sandy beach at Duncannon is just 8km away
Campile is an ideal base to explore the Hook Peninsula as well south
east Waterford via the Passage East Ferry.
