Courtown is a
seaside resort in northeast Co Wexford. It is also referred to as
Courtown Harbour and is situated on the wide sweep of Courtown Bay.
In recent years Courtown has effectively merged with the adjoining
village of Riverchapel to become one of Ireland’s premier seaside
resorts.
The beaches in and around Courtown have been firm favourites with
tourists since the turn of the century. To this day the main (north)
beach is still a favourite for families, walkers, swimmers, water
sports enthusiasts and the sun seekers. The much smaller south beach
is not suitable for swimming but is a lovely relaxing spot to enjoy
the coastal views. Just round the rocks from Courtown's south beach
is the long sandy beach of Ardamine – another popular family
destination.
The construction of Courtown’s harbour began in the early 1800’s. To
this day it is a working fishing harbour and also the venue for
Courtown Sailing Club which provides ISA approved Powerboat Training
Courses and Dinghy Training Courses. The Ounavarra River flows into
the harbour.
Courtown and the surrounding area offer numerous activities and
amenities to suit everybody’s tastes. In the resort itself there are
amusement parks, arcades, Pirates Cove which offers ten pin bowling,
adventure golf and the Forest Park Leisure Centre with its fantastic
waterslide. The surrounding hinterland has an extensive selection of
top class golf courses, horseriding, horse racing, greyhound racing
as well a number of visitor centres reflecting Wexford’s diverse
history.
A new addition to Courtown’s tourist amenities is the superb Gravity
Extreme Adventure Centre at Forest Park. This is a new and exciting
High Ropes Adventure Centre. Whether trying the dual zip wire,
aerial trekking courses or the climbing and abseiling wall, the
visitor will be testing himself or herself to the limits while
having the best day out ever.
Courtown and North Wexford offer a wealth of golf courses that are
suited to every level of golf. Courtown Golf Club on the northern
outskirts of the town is a first rate parkland course with beautiful
mature trees and stunning views of the Irish Sea and the north
Wexford coastline. Founded in 1936, Courtown Golf Club has been
continuously improved and now boasts 18 holes which pose a unique
challenge for golfers of all levels.
Just over 3km north of Courtown is the scenic 9 hole Tara Glen Golf
Club. A further 2km inland is the wonderful 18 hole Ballymoney Golf
Club. This course is set in the beautiful setting of Courteencurragh
Wood and is overlooked by the picturesque Tara Hill to the north.
The club is open for green fees at all times and offers great value
for money.
Less than 5km north of Courtown along the coast is the superb
Seafield Golf Club. This course is an 18 hole 6,447 yard
championship golf course. It was designed by course designer Peter
McEvoy. The natural surroundings, layout and the attention to detail
at Seafield have created one of the finest courses in the south east
of Ireland. The internationally renowned European Golf Club near
Brittas Bay is just 30km north of Courtown.
Courtown along with Cahore (12km) to the south and Castletown (11km)
to the north are the main sea angling venues in Wexford. The most
popular types of fish caught along this part of the Wexford coast
are toperays, smooth hound, bull huss, sperdogs and bass, while the
recommended baits to use are mackerel, herring or ragworm. There are
regular competitions held at these venues.
North Wexford is in close proximity to County Wicklow which makes
Courtown a great base to explore paces such as Wicklow’s historic
Gaol, Avondale, Avoca (also known as Ballykissangel) and Glendalough.
With bars, restaurants, shops, adventure centres, golf, fishing,
horse riding, the harbour and lovely sandy beaches to enjoy, there
is something for everybody in beautiful Courtown. |
