Curracloe is a
small village in County Wexford in southeast Co Wexford. It is
located 9km northeast of Wexford town.
The renowned Blue Flag Curracloe Beach is just 2km east of the
village. Curracloe beach is a long wide fine stretch of beach with 3
main entrances known locally as Ballinsker, White Gap and Culletons.
This superb beach is responsible for a major influx of holidaymakers
every summer. It is a safe place for bathing and the area around the
beach has been sensitively developed as an amenity for visitors to
enjoy.
Curracloe Stand and Ballinesker beach were used for the filming of
the D-Day sequence in Saving Private Ryan, due to their similarity
to Omaha Beach in Normandy.
Fabulous horse rides can be experienced on Curracloes' golden sands
by contacting the Fiske Family at Curracloe House Equestrian Centre.
Shore fishing off the beach is another popular activity. Curracloe
is a family resort with lots to do and see with nightly
entertainment in the local pubs and supervised kiddies and teenage
discos run throughout the tourist season. The resort is also just a
10 minute drive to Wexford town with all its amenities and
attractions.
6km south of Curracloe is the renowned Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. As
many as 10,000 (1/3 of the world's total population) of Greenland,
white fronted geese winter here. Large flocks of geese, ducks and
wading birds can be viewed in the autumn period. The well-equipped
visitor centre has many interesting exhibitions and there are also
hides and other facilities for bird watching.
