Duncannon is a
seaside village on the beautiful Hook Peninsula in southwest Co
Wexford. It is located on the western shores of Waterford Harbour.
It is situated 20km south of New Ross and just 15km east of
Waterford City via the Passage East Ferry.
For many years Duncannon was primarily a fishing village. Nowadays
it also has a thriving tourist trade thanks in no small part to its
beautiful and sheltered Blue Flag beach.
The International
Sand Sculpting Festival takes place on the beach every year in
August and includes face-painting, fireworks and beach parties.
Water sports such as boarding, sailing, sea-canoeing, dingy sailing,
snorkelling and other outdoor activities are very popular in the
Duncannon area.
Another major tourist attraction is Duncannon Fort. This imposing
fort sits on a rocky promontory jutting into the channel of
Waterford Harbour. Duncannon Fort was built in 1588 and today it
incorporates a maritime museum, arts centre, café and craft shop and
is open daily to visitors from June to September. Guided tours are
available.
Duncannon is a popular sea angling destination. The Hook Sea Angling
Centre in the village caters for everyone from the experienced
angler to the family just wanting to experience the thrill of a
short boat trip. The centre offers deep sea fishing (wreck, reef and
shark fishing), estuary all-weather fishing, family boat trips and
historical river tours from Ballyhack/Duncannon to New
Ross/Waterford.
Duncannon is situated on the Ring of Hook drive. This drive is a
stunning route which takes in much of the most beautiful coastline
of West County Wexford. On the drive you can see castles, forts,
abbeys, beaches, sea cliffs and stop off in one of the many visitor
centres in Dunbrody, Duncannon itself or Hook Lighthouse. There are
also several pubs and restaurants along the way for the thirsty or
hungry traveller |
