Ferns is a
small town in north County Wexford. It is 16 km northwest of
Enniscorthy on the main road to Gorey.
Ferns is steeped in history. It dates back to an early monastic
settlements in the 6th century. The ruins of Ferns Castle are in the
centre of the town. This castle was an Anglo-Norman fortress and was
built in the 13th century by William, Earl Marshall. Today about
half of the castle still remains.
The town also
contains the 13th-century St Edan's Cathedral (Church of Ireland)
and several high crosses and part crosses.
Some of Ireland’s most beautiful upland country is only a short
drive away from Ferns including Mount Leinster, the Blackstairs
Mountains and the Wicklow Mountains. To the east lie the wonderful
beaches of County Wexford which stretch all the way from Courtown
right down to Curracloe.
