Oylegate - or
Oilgate - is a small village situated in the heart of Co
Wexford. It is located about half way between Wexford Town and
Enniscorthy and lies about 2km from the eastern banks of the River
Slaney. The village hosts a half marathon in August each year.
Oylegate and the surrounding countryside has produced All Ireland
winning hurlers, Ireland's best ploughmen, a racehorse trainer of
international renown, distilling experts, an inventor of
agricultural implements and many others whose various talents have
gone into shaping the village.
The Power family, of Powers Whiskey fame, lived at Edermine House
and built a row of houses in Oylegate village in 1878, with an
additional group of houses added in 1895. For over 150 years the
menfolk of Oylegate spent half the year fishing for salmon on the
Slaney and the remaining time working in the Powers distillery.
