The village of Lady's
Island is situated 6 kilometres south of Rosslare Harbour in County
Wexford. The lake itself is a shallow lagoon separated from the open
sea by a shingle bank. The island is connected to the mainland by a
causeway and is the site of a well-known pilgrimage held annually in
August.
It was the site of an
ancient monastery dedicated to Our Lady. The ruins of the
Augustinian Priory are still to be seen, as is the Norman tower,
which leans at a greater angle than the tower at Pisa. The
pilgrimage season starts of the 15th August and continues until the
8th September. Our
Lady's Island is a small village located on the south eastern
tip of Co Wexford. It is 8km south of Rosslare and 18km south of
Wexford Town.
The village lies on the northern shores of the unique Lady's Island
Lake. This lagoon style lake is separated from the sea by a barrier
of sand. Salt water seeps through the barrier, while fresh water
flows into the lake from run-off from the land around the lake. This
means that the lake is neither fresh nor salt water but somewhere in
between. The lake is a great place for sea birds, in particular
terns, who live there in the summer months. Of particular interest
is the rare Roseate Tern.
The beautiful Carne beach is located 3km south of Our Lady's Island.
This is a very safe beach for children and also great for walking.
Just 5km east of Our Lady's Island is the fabulous St. Helens Bay
Golf Resort . This resort has developed into one of Ireland's
foremost golf destinations.
With a challenging 18
hole course and panoramic views of the South Wexford Coastline the
visitor is guaranteed an enjoyable golfing experience. In 2006
another 9 hole golf course, Tuskar Rock Golf Club, was added to the
resort. |
