Rosslare Strand,
or simply Rosslare is a seaside resort in the south eastern tip of
Co Wexford. The name Rosslare Strand is used to distinguish it from
the nearby Rosslare Harbour, site of the Rosslare Europort.
With its beautiful Blue Flag beach and its reputation as being the
sunniest spot in Ireland Rosslare has been a popular tourist resort
for generations. The long sandy strand it ideal for swimming,
walking, kite flying or relaxing. Rosslare has several fine hotels
and a good choice of restaurants and lively pubs.
The Rosslare Sports and Recreation Centre is a superb
facility that literally has something for all the family. It has a
soccer pitch, 4 tennis courts, crazy golf and a children’s
playground with swings, slides and trampolines. Moving indoors there
are video games, pool tables, table tennis tables, basketball,
badminton and indoor soccer. Summer camps operate during the holiday
season.
The Rosslare Water Sports Centre offers visitors a taste of
adventure with RYA / ISA qualified instructors giving lessons in
windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. The Rosslare Bowling Green has an
all weather artificial surface. This special synthetic grass surface
is capable of hosting international Championship matches.
The renowned Kelly's Resort Hotel features the Aqua Club and Sea
Spa. This wonderful facility has two swimming pools, jacuzzi,
steam room, sauna, sun bed, beauty treatment rooms, plunge pool and
an outdoor Canadian Hot Tub.
Rosslare is also a good base for the keen golfer. Rosslare Golf Club
is just to the north of the resort. This beautiful golf course is
laid out by the Irish Sea and is a traditional Championship Links
originally designed by Hawtree and Taylor and later added to by
Christy O’Conner Jnr. St Helen's Bay Golf Club is located 8km south
of Rosslare. This 18 hole championship golf course was designed by
Philip Walton and includes nine water features and over 5,000 trees,
as well as strategically-placed bunkers. Just 15km north of Rosslare
is the well established Wexford Golf Club.
While staying in Rosslare, Wexford Town(15km) and the National
Heritage Park in Ferrycarrig (18km) are both well worth a visit. The
National Heritage Park covers 35 acres and takes visitors through
9,000 years of Irish history. A trail featuring prehistoric
campsites, ringforts, Fulacht Fiadh, crannogs, Viking houses and
other historic landmarks awaits discovery. A new 180m trail also
takes visitors deep into wet woodlands, winding between ancient
trees and pools of water, to experience at first-hand what Ireland
must have looked like to our Stone Age ancestors.
The quaint heritage town of Wexford with its narrow and
ancient Viking streets and colourful quayside lined with historic
buildings is a joy to visit. The Westgate Heritage Centre in the
town is a 'must see'. Also worth a visit is the Irish Agricultural
Museum in Johnstown Castle which is just 10km from Rosslare.
Each year, on Easter Monday, Wexford Triathlon Club organises a 10k
road race in Rosslare Strand. The first race in 2010 was a great
success with 180 runners and walkers enjoying a great race with a
great atmosphere. Since then the race has gone on from strength to
strength. The Rosslare Pikeman Triathlon will take place in Rosslare
in July 2012. this is Wexford's first Olympic distance triathlon.
The open water swim is 1.5Km, the cycle is 42Km on good quality flat
roads, and the 10km run is 2 loops following the same course.
