Avoca lies on the
road linking Rathnew with Woodenbridge .The River Avoca flows
through the village creating a picturesque setting. Having enjoyed
two hundred years of fame, thanks to Moore’s Melodies, the
reputation of Avoca soared even higher when, in the 1990s, it became
the location for the internationally acclaimed TV soap
Ballykissangel.
The first records of Avoca as a settlement go back to the 18th
century, when the watermill that is still preserved there was built
to serve the community. Its power was used both to grind corn and to
operate spinning and weaving machinery – and that was the origin of
the world famous Avoca Handweavers. A great selection of traditional
knits and crafts are available here.
A local farmers market is held in the Parish hall during summer
months. Staying at the
scenic village of Avoca will allow you to enjoy the scenery of
Wicklow and take advantage of the various outdoor pursuits
available, from walking to golf, then you can relax in the welcoming
atmosphere of the charismatic pubs and restaurants of the area.
Wicklow Town itself is also well worth a look, as is the coastal
resort of Brittas Bay where the beaches are superb. |
