Ballinaclash is a
small village situated in south County Wicklow. Rathdrum and the
mainline railway to Dublin are only minutes away with 3 trains
commuting every day to Dublin city.
The village is located just to the north west of the famous ‘Meeting
of the Waters’. It is approximately 60km south of Dublin. Situated
among the Wicklow foothills, the village extends either side of the
Avonbeg river valley. It can be reached from the main road, the R753
from Rathdrum to Aughrim.
There are few details known about Ballinaclash’s history. However,
early plans and maps show that Ballinaclash village originated as a
small workers settlement on the Earl of Meath’s Estate. Small
terraced and detached houses were built lining the main road at the
river crossing. Ruins of an abbey and many churches can be found in
the area. Remains of mills and furnaces, that once were abundant in
the area can also be occasionally seen.
There are two famous historic figures associated with the village.
John Millington Synge the poet and playwright, wrote his play ‘A
Tinker’s Wedding’ based on the people and village of Ballinaclash.
Also, the infamous Buck Whaley has been connected with Ballinaclash
Bridge. He apparently jumped off the bridge on his horse for a bet.
Ballinaclash has a thriving community spirit, and it is clear the
residents take great pride in their village. A Ballinaclash
newsletter is published quarterly and many active groups use the
community hall which was originally the old school on the east side
of the river. ‘Phelan’s licensed grocer’ has become the heart of the
village. |
