Blessington is a
thriving Irish rural town particularly at weekends with its own
character and charming tree-lined Main Street.
Poulaphouca Reservoir, also known locally as the Blessington Lake,
the reservoir was created when the waterfall at Poulaphouca on the
River Liffey was dammed by the ESB for a hydroelectric plant which
is still in use today. The valley was flooded and the resulting
lakes extend over approximately 5,000 acres (20 kmē). A small
village was submerged by the damming of the waterfall, and the
remains of roads can still be seen leading down into the lake.
In addition to electricity, the lakes also provide water for the
locality and the Dublin region as well as provide a leisure
resource. There is now a lakeside luxury hotel complex in the
Blessington area, with its own helipad, and lakeside facilities
which has helped to develop tourism in the area. The lake is also
extensively used by boatmen and fishermen, and is a training
location for the Irish Air Corps HQ divisions from Baldonnel, 15 km
north of Blessington, and also Local Civil Defence Water rescue
teams.
Blessington Sailing Club is located on the shores of the Reservoir.
The sheltered bay, with its two slips and sandy beach, faces east
and is protected from the prevailing winds. The Clubhouse, built in
1988, has a recreational area, kitchen, and full changing and shower
facilities. Dinghy sailing predominates in the Club. There are
strong fleets of GP14's and Catamarans, as well as Lasers and
Mirrors. In recent years, we have a growing fleet of Toppers in
which many of our younger members begin their sailing careers. There
are also some small cruisers and day boats based at the Club.
Blessington Lakes Golf Club is set in the panoramic setting of
Boystown in the heart of the Wicklow countryside. Come and enjoy a
pleasant game of golf in a location where you can relax and enjoy
the picturesque views of the Blessington lakes and stunning Wicklow
Mountains.
Blessington Community College opened in 1993 on an 11-acre site on
the Blessington/Naas Road. It is a modern well-equipped,
co-educational and multi-denominational second level school.
Additional classrooms are being provided to cater for the expected
population increase in Blessington.
With Co. Kildare to the west, the Wicklow Mountains & Glendalough to
the east and Dublin Centre just 20km to the north Blessington is an
excellent base from which you can enjoy your holiday. |
